The Pennsylvania State Capitol is considered one of the most successful
endeavors of the "American Renaissance" where a unity of art, history, and
architecture was achieved in a single project.
Architect Joseph M. Huston consciously designed his Capitol dome as a
direct reference to Michelangelo's dome of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. In
the rotunda, he borrowed many aspects of Garnier's Paris Opera House
including the grand marble staircase and the caryatid doorway flanked by two
light standards and the triple arcaded gallery.
For the fine arts, Huston laid out the vast program for the subjects and
themes of all the art to glorify Pennsylvania's achievements in labor,
industry, and history. Huston was determined to make the Capitol in
Harrisburg, "the greatest work ever produced in America." To ensure his
vision, he sought out some of the finest artists and craftsmen in the world.
Among them was Edwin Austin Abbey, Georg Among Barnard, Violet Oakley,
William Brantley Van Ingen, and Henry Chapman Mercer.
This unique postcard collection is the first in a series that promotes
the continuing efforts in restoring the Capitol while celebrating the
restoration of the past. The set includes four glossy, color 4" x 6" cards
packaged along with a description card in a coordinating envelope. This set includes a U.S. Postal Service first-day cancellation stamp on each card and the envelope they are packaged in.

Capitol Rotunda and Dome Preservation

The first large-scale restoration project undertaken by the Capitol Preservation
Committee involved extensive repairs to the Capitol dome and conservation of the
Edwin Austin Abbey murals in the Rotunda.
Techniques including infrared photography and boroscopic investigation were
used to examine the roof and drain lines, and determine patterns of moisture migration,
temperature, and relative humidity. A long-term maintenance process was established
and sensors were installed to monitor moisture on a regular basis. In order to stabilize
and repair both the paintings and the walls, it was necessary to remove the four massive
Abbey murals. After being cleaned, repaired, and mounted on marouflage panels, the
murals were hoisted back into the lunettes and secured to the walls.
Suspended by a web of scaffolding erected more than 220 feet from the Rotunda's
Moravian tile floor, conservators worked downward, completing the restoration by
cleaning, repairing, and intricately repainting and reapplying gold metallic leaf to the
decorative ceiling, walls, and elaborate embellishments.
Approx. 30 minutes, color, 1987.

The Barnard Statuary Project

Hailed as the Michelangelo of his time, in 1902, sculptor George Grey
Barnard was awarded the commission for the sculptural groups located at the Capitol's main entrance. In the midst of much fanfare, Barnard's sculpture was dedicated at a ceremony on October 4, 1911—five years to the day after the Capitol building was dedicated.
In addition to their artistic beauty and intimate connection with the Capitol, the Barnard Statuary represents more than 75 years of stone conservation history.
The years of exposure to Harrisburg's harsh weather conditions have taken their toll. To help stabilize the deterioration process and prolong their lifespan, the
Capitol Preservation Committee has developed a long-term conservation strategy.
This video documents the Committee's 1998 conservation project in amazing detail, showing all facets of the conservation process and the important work being done to preserve this incredible, historic work of art for future generations.

The Restoration of "Commonwealth"

In 1905, renowned sculptor Roland Hinton
Perry executed the working model of the
statue for the Pennsylvania Capitol dome.
Capitol architect Joseph Huston, designed
the specifications for the gilded bronze
statue, which he called Commonwealth.
Weighing three tons and standing 14 feet
tall, nearly 250 feet above street level,
the classically designed statue represents
the ideals upon which the Commonwealth
of Pennsylvania was founded.
After enduring decades of harsh weather
conditions, much of Commonwealth's gold
gilding had eroded, leaving the exposed
bronze vulnerable to the elements. Freezing
water caused cracks to develop in the bronze
folds of the statue's drapery and corrosion
plagued the bolts securing the statue to its
cast iron base.
In 1997, the Capitol Preservation
Committee began the painstaking process of
restoring the once magnificent statue to its
original grandeur. More than nine months
later, Commonwealth was transformed from
a weather-damaged statue to a dazzling beacon
standing majestically atop the Capitol dome.
